5 Things I Did to Make It Feel Like Spring This Weekend...

This weather is seriously killing me. It physically pains me to put on my huge parka every day, but whenever I attempt to wear just a vest, I pay the price. It's just a fact of life in Upstate NY that winter is here to stay for at least another month... but that doesn't mean I can't pretend spring is on the way, and you can too!

I Painted My Nails.

Well, actually Friday night my sister offered to paint my nails using her at home gel kit. I totally took her up on the offer & am now sporting some lilac nails that remind me of spring every time I look down. The color came with her kit but looks exactly like Essie's Bangle Jangle.

I Bought Some Peeps.

I know that you can get Peeps for every holiday now, but in my mind Peeps = Easter = Spring. Plus a 4 pack of these babies is actually only 110 calories & a perfect preggo indulgence.

I Put Out Flowers.

I was at Trader Joe's Saturday morning & they had the most beautiful display of tulips. I just had to have some, plus some hydrangeas to fill out the arrangement. They make me happy every time I walk by dining room table.

I Got My Car Washed.

I got my car washed on my way home from school Friday & it was so nice to have all of the salt off of it. I know it's going to get covered again because this snow isn't going anywhere anytime soon, but I drove a clean car this weekend & that made me feel better.

I Put Out Our Easter Decorations.

Nothing says spring like a house full of pastel Easter decorations! I pulled it all out, lit a peach scented candle, & turned the heat up to 70 - don't tell Eric! It was a nice little party as I decorated for the holiday.

I absolutely love this picture of Ella being scarred for life by the Easter Bunny last year...

Friday Favorites - Bunnies, HGTV, and Other Randomness

This week has absolutely flown by. I have no idea why, except maybe that I was just so busy I didn't have time to think it was dragging on. We've kept things pretty low key all week long & gotten back into our routine after having last week off. One of my favorite things in the world is going home right after school - no practice, no meetings, no errands - I got to do that twice this week & it just made me happy.

Last night, we went out to dinner with some of our favorite people - Uncle Matt & Aunt Britt! We all met up at the Back Nine Grill and I shared a Meat Lovers Flatbread with Ella. It was so good. If you didn't know, pizza with pepperoni, bacon, and ham is my favorite. (I ate it too fast to take a picture. #bloggerfail)

Another thing that makes me happy is Miss Ella. I swear she is just the silliest, happiest little girl. Lately she's been a handful, but I'm loving every second of it. This was her on the way to the car this morning...

I usually carry her, but I had my hands full with other things, so I asked her to walk. I thought she was right behind me... then I found her in a snow bank. #momfail

This weekend, Ella is going to spend the night with Eric's dad & step mom. Since I'll have some free time, I'm going to strip down my Valentine's decorations & put up my Easter decor. Normally, I'd throw St. Patrick's Day in between, but they're so close together this year that I'm jumping the gun. I'm going to hang up this banner that I made last year! It was so easy to make & it's one of my favorite DIY projects!

And while she's gone, I'll probably continue to binge on my new favorite HGTV show - Fixer Upper. I just love Chip & Johanna. And can we talk about her outfits? She has laid back casual style nailed!

Bumpdate: 19 Weeks

size of the baby: Mango

total weight gain: 11 lbs.

gender: Baby Girl - Miss Olivia Rose

maternity clothes: Other than my absolute favorite jeans & my workout clothes, I'm wearing pretty much all maternity pants now. I'm just more comfortable in them & I have nice ones from J.Crew that I love so it isn't that bad. I was watching Mad Men with Eric the other night & I would die if I had to dress like Betsy did when she was pregnant! I'm still wearing my normal tops & dresses. The bump isn't huge, but it's definitely more pronounced than it was before our winter break. If people didn't know before, they definitely do now!

movement: She's just a moving in there. Eric is trying really hard to feel her, but nothing yet. She's getting stronger though, so I think it will be soon.

sleep: Still sleeping ok. I'm up a few times to go to the bathroom & get a drink. The dreams are still crazy, but nothing that is keeping me up at night.

missing: The warm weather. I'm so over winter! It just makes everything more difficult. I'm sick of layers. I'm sick of starting my car a half an hour early in the morning. I'm concerned that my puffer jacket isn't going to zip in a week or two. I just want spring.

craving: chicken wings - which I had while I was at my parents' this week. Other than that, just my normal...

symptoms: Things are getting just a little harder. I can still carry Ella, but not as long & easily as before. I was just a little winded going up the consecutive flights of stairs at my parents' house.

Ella is: starting potty training. Everyone please say a prayer for me. She's not very focused, so I'm worried it's going to be a process.

looking forward to: the arrival of Olivia's crib & getting her closet put together. I'd like to start pulling things out of storage & getting her room together, but Eric is quick to remind me that we still have at least 4 months to go...

best moments: shopping for matching outfits for Ella & Olivia! I am going to have the best time ever with two little girls :)

What I Wore Wednesday

I've got to admit, I'm kind of proud of myself for how well I've been holding it together lately. I haven't succumb to leggings every day & I'm still managing to wear my non-maternity jeans. I'm putting together actual outfits - which isn't something I did every day when I was pregnant the first time around. I've mainly been in jeans for the past couple of weeks, but I did have to wear work clothes on Monday & Tuesday of this week....

I wore this outfit out to dinner with my parents on Friday night, hence the selfie in their bedroom. I love this color block sweater that I borrowed from my mom's closet. It has leather elbow patches that you can't see & it's cashmere. I think she may have had a panic attack when I ordered wings while wearing it, but no harm done!
jeans - Old Navy // sweater - J.Crew // watch - Fossil // boots - American Eagle
My work outfit yesterday features these maternity pants that I scored on a major sale. I have never owned olive pants before, but I'm finding different ways to pair them on Pinterest & you'll definitely be seeing more of them soon!
pants - J.Crew // sweater - LOFT // flats - Steve Madden // necklace - LOFT

I've had this sweater from Forever 21, well.... forever. It's held up surprisingly well & I love how the waist ties to accentuate the bump. I figure now that it's out there, I might as well show it off. I'm also wearing another pair of maternity pants that I got on sale from J.Crew. I'm telling you, if you're pregnant, stalk their sale page because you'll find some great stuff!
sweater - Forever 21 // pants - J.Crew // boots - Steve Madden // shirt - Target

This was an outfit for a day of shopping with Ella last week while I was on break. It was inspired by this outfit off of Pinterest & even though my bump is a lot smaller, I loved it. You will also notice I'm wearing my gray booties a lot. I'm not sure why, just loving them lately!
jeans - J.Crew // boots - American Eagle // plaid shirt - Old Navy // vest - J.Crew Factory
necklace - Nordstrom // long sleeve shirt - Gap // bracelets - Alex & Ani
And I've already shared this outfit once, but I just love it so I'm sharing it again. My Bliss Sweater is one of my favorite items this winter & it's on sale right now! I wore it to brunch & got a bunch of compliments on it. Bonus - it was really warm because I'd layered my MaxHeat shirt under it on a very cold day.

Applesauce Oatmeal Cookies

Yesterday afternoon, it was absolutely frigid outside & I wanted to warm up the house with some baking. Going to the store was out of the question, and I knew I was out of butter. Then a lightbulb went off in my head & I realized I had a ton of homemade applesauce that I could substitute. After scouring Pinterest, I ended up modifying this recipe to suit what I had in my own kitchen. I ended up with a cookie that is soft, chewy, and just sweet enough to hit the spot!

The results were not only delicious, but a whole lot healthier than I expected. After punching my recipe into a calorie calculator, I discovered each of these has less than 50 calories each! That's a major kitchen victory!

  • Dry
    • 2 cups flour
    • 1 cup oats
    • 1/2 tsp baking soda
    • 1/4 tsp salt

  • Wet
    • 1 egg
    • 3/4 cup cinnamon applesauce
    • 1/2 cup brown sugar
    • 1/4 cup granulated sugar
    • 1/4 cup canola oil
    • 1 tsp vanilla
  • Icing
    • 1 cup confectionery sugar
    • 2 tbsp milk
    • 1/2 tsp vanilla

  1. In a medium mixing bowl, combine all of the dry ingredients together.
  2. In a large mixing bowl, combine all of the wet ingredients together.
  3. Slowly pour & mix the dry ingredients in with the wet ingredients, until a dough mixture is formed.
  4. Chill dough for a minimum of 30 minutes.
  5. Preheat oven to 350 degrees.
  6. Using a spoon, form dough into 1 inch balls. The recipe should make about 3 dozen.
  7. Bake cookies on a baking stone or a non-stick cookie sheet for 10 to 12 minutes.
  8. While the cookies bake, make your icing by combining all 3 ingredients together. It should be runny so that you can drizzle it over top of the cookies.
  9. Remove the cookies from the oven & transfer them to a rack to cool.
  10. When all cookies are out, drizzle your icing over top!

Weekend Recap: Road Trip Edition

On Thursday, Ella & I loaded up the car and headed for my parent's house in Albany. We got on the road bright & early because we were slated to meet my mom for lunch & the roads weren't the best. Thankfully, once we got out of Rochester & hit the Thru-way, we made pretty good time. Overall, it took us about 4 1/2 hours, which is about 45 minutes longer than normal, but Ella was so good in the car, which is important because she really could have made 4 1/2 hours seem like 9 if she'd tried to.

We met my mom at her office & dropped off some cupcakes for her employees, then headed out to lunch. We decided on pizza - which was a bad choice because Ella insisted on sitting next to my mom, who was wearing a white shirt. Thankfully, she didn't have any meetings in the afternoon & it came out in the wash.

We got to my parents' house in time for Ella to nap, which allowed me to get a run in on the treadmill. This was the only peaceful run I got in this weekend because Ella is totally against me using the treadmill. She'd be completely occupied then hear the treadmill kick on & come to get me off. Thankfully my parents intervened so I got cardio in every day, but I was so surprised by Ella's reaction. Her babysitter runs all of the time while they play, and she doesn't give her any problems. Who knows...

my parents' little gym set up - a treadmill, tv, & bike - makes me happy

Friday was a very exciting day because my dad took the day off & the three of us headed to The Great Escape's indoor water park in Lake George! I wasn't very excited to put on my swimsuit at 19 weeks pregnant, but I was excited that it was 85 degrees inside! Ella played until she could barely keep her eyes open, and we ended up dragging her out of the place after about 3 hours. She's definitely not big enough to spend a whole day there, but she loved the time that we spent there!

swinging with my dad

That night we went out to dinner at one of my parents' favorite restaurants, where I satisfied my craving for chicken wings. I wish I could say that was the only splurge I had this weekend, but if you saw this post on my IG, you know that isn't true...

The good news is that I did stay within my calories every day (I get 2,100 a day for this trimester, which is a lot in my opinion) and I exercised every day too. So, yes I indulged in a Zinger & chicken wings... but I didn't overdo it.

Saturday was spent doing what my mom & I do best - shopping! She's headed to Florida in less than a month, so she was able to buy some super cute spring stuff, while we both kind of went overboard on Ella & Olivia. I did buy two things for myself - the skirt I featured on Friday, which I actually think may fit both before & after baby, and some new socks. I know, very exciting stuff, but I have a ton of maternity clothes from my friends & feel guilty buying anything I'll only wear a handful of times.

Sunday morning we went to breakfast at Cracker Barrel, which is one of my favorites, and got ready to head home. Eric was obviously missing us, so we left right after breakfast. Ella didn't sleep at all, but was good as gold watching Mickey Mouse Clubhouse on the iPad.

Once we made it home, Ella got busy in her playroom, and I got busy unpacking. Eric made a delicious, healthy dinner to get me back on track, and then we all bundled up to watch our shows: Ella - Sofia, Eric - The Oscars, and me - Fixer Upper.

We're all back at work & in our routine today! Only 5 weeks until Spring Break! Not that I'm counting...

Gender Reveal Dinner

I wanted nothing more than to have a gender reveal party for this pregnancy. One of my best friends had volunteered to host it. We'd started to plan it. Then... we couldn't find a date. We both wanted our families there & coordinating those schedules is a nightmare. Plus, our ultrasound got scheduled for a Wednesday & I know myself well enough to know that I simply wouldn't be able to wait until the weekend. Thus... we gave up the Pinterest inspired dream.

Except... not completely. I knew that I still wanted to do something fun to celebrate. I wanted to include Ella & I wanted to incorporate an announcement to our friends. Like I said, I'm not a patient person, so doing professional photographs was simply out of the question. I'm also not particularly crafty or made of money, so what we ended up with was a simple party at home to celebrate the fact that we will be welcoming Miss Olivia into our lives in less than five months.

Ella & I made Strawberry Cupcakes while Eric was at work Wednesday afternoon. I had thought about trying to do a white cupcake with a fun filling, but like I said - not crafty. I did surprise myself with my simple decorations though. I bought a bag of pink balloons for a dollar & then use a needle with thread to make the balloon banner behind us!

Eric brought me home some hydrangeas & this adorable little balloon too! So we had a very cheerful little table.

Ella was all about the cupcakes & was dying to eat one. I swear, it was torture for her to make it through dinner with those staring across the table at her.

And of course we took some fun pictures in our pink outfits to share with our friends & family!

Friday Favorites for Spring

So... we're still a ways out from spring in Upstate New York. In fact, I don't bank on actual spring weather until early May. And as much as my sister & I have dropped hints, my parents haven't invited us on their trip to Florida next month. But, that doesn't mean I can't dream... and shop.

First up on my list - new sunglasses. I've been wearing my Coach Kristina Aviators for almost three years & they're getting beat up. Last year I bought a few cheap pairs, but they didn't hold up well at all. I've been rocking my classic Wayfarers lately, but I'm in love with these! Nothing says spring in Rochester like lilac...

Ray Ban Original Aviator with Lilac Lenses

And I know it's silly for me to shop for clothes, since I'll be living in my stockpile of maternity maxis all spring, but I can't help myself. I walked into Athleta the other day to stalk the clearance section & immediately fell in love with this skort. (Yes, I love skorts.) I think it's the perfect piece for after baby - comfortable, yet put together. I mean how cute does the model look?

Athleta Stretch In Skirt

What isn't silly for me to be shopping for? Baby clothes. Ok, if you ask my husband it is silly for me to be shopping for baby clothes since we have a rather sizable tote full in our basement. What he doesn't understand is that a) there's no way he's ever going to get me to stop & b) Ella & Olivia will clearly need coordinating outfits this summer. #duh Thankfully, Gap has come through in a major way with some of the sweetest summer dresses in history for both of the girls. (I just LOVE typing the phrase "both of the girls.") I just love these ones below...

Both dresses are called "Eyelet Flutter." You can find the baby version here & the toddler version here! You will definitely be seeing my girls in them this summer!

Oh! I'm adding one last thing because I was in Gap today & saw that Ella's favorite sandals from last summer are back! She wore them to death & had them in both colors. I'm sure they'll sell out fast, so I already bought her new size - in both colors - again!

OK Spring, I'm ready. Let's get a move on!

Thursday, February 19, 2015

Bumpdate: 18 Weeks

size of the baby: Sweet Potato

total weight gain: 9.5 lbs.

gender: We finally know... it's a girl! I'm so excited to start shopping for her room & to be calling her by her name.

maternity clothes: I can still wear non-maternity jeans with a belly band, so I was surprised when my sweater was a little too short on Sunday! As hard as I'm fighting it, I may be breaking out maternity tops sooner than later...

movement: I'm still feeling the baby once or twice a day, but during the sonogram she was going nuts! It's crazy to think how much is happening right inside me & I'm totally unaware!

sleep: I have had the craziest dreams all week long. I wish I could piece them together enough to tell you about them. They're so random...

craving: Lots of things... a hot panini at the moment. Also crinkle cut french fries from Tom Wahl's & a Sonic Blast. Just junk food in general I guess...

a cookie dough blast from Sonic... doesn't matter that it was -10 outside

symptoms: Like I said, the crazy dreams. Other than that I'm doing good!

Ella is: still adjusting to her new room. She loves it, but doesn't understand why her old room isn't hers anymore. I'm hoping once the crib goes in she'll catch on a little bit more.

And I was not expecting her reaction when we took her with us to our doctor's appointment. She either cried or pouted the whole time! I think it was more about the fact that she could sit with me than the actual baby, but it wasn't the magical moment I'd envisioned.

looking forward to: my trip to my mom & dad's this weekend! Ella & I are on our way this morning & will be there until Sunday. We have big plans including an indoor water park & some baby shopping!

best moment: finding out the gender of the baby then setting up our fun little dinner party to celebrate! I'll be sharing that tomorrow!

and my favorite outtake that just happens to show my growing belly...

What I Wore Wednesday - Spirit Week Edition

Spirit Week is one of my favorite weeks of the year. First, I love dressing like a nutjob for fun. Second, it means February Break begins on Friday! Last, it means we have a pep rally, and every cheerleading coach loves a good pep rally!

Monday - Sports Day

This is the easiest day of the week. I just had to throw on my Bills hoodie & my new favorite slip on sneakers and then I was set!

Tuesday - Red, White, & Blue Day

My FAVORITE day of the week! I was going to save this outfit for Pinspired, because I totally got the idea for my gingham shirt with a striped blazer from Shanna - but I just loved it too much to wait a month!
**Side note: my mirror used to be in what is now Ella's room. Thus, it's temporarily placed in the complete mess of a soon to be nursery. I honestly have no idea where it's going to end up. But the point it, please ignore the mess behind me!**
Wednesday - Neon Day

I like to think of this as Highlighter Day, because whenever you walk by a classroom it essentially looks like a box of highlighters. I went with a neon pink tank, my neon pink Nike Frees, and my neon yellow Kendra Scott necklace.

Thursday - Flip Flop Day

Just to be clear, we don't wear flip flops on Flip Flop Day. Instead, teachers dress like students & vice versa. In our middle school, the girls have a pretty definitive style - anything from Victoria's Secret Pink, leggings, and Uggs. However, I didn't feel comfortable strutting my stuff in leggings & an exposed booty all day - at least not at school - so I opted for skinny jeans with my Ugg moccassins & a Pink quarter zip sweatshirt.

Friday - Blue & Gold Day

This is another easy day when you're the cheerleading coach. I own a ton of blue & gold, but it was absolutely freezing on Friday (to the point that we weren't even sure if we'd have school), so I put personal comfort ahead of style. I ended up wearing a 1/4 zip fleece hoodie that I normally only wear around the house, plus two layers underneath, with my favorite distressed jeans (also worn on Tuesday) and my Ugg moccasins. Trust me, none of you want to copy it, but it had to be done!!

Alone Time...

Like I said on Friday, Ella was at her Grandma Nancy's this weekend, leaving Eric & I with lots of alone time. In this time, we discovered that we suck at life without Ella. Ok, maybe that's an overstatement, but we consistently found ourselves with periods of downtime that were just so foreign to us we didn't know what to do.

This resulted in me reading two books & Eric watching half a season of MadMen. But in between our down time, we actually did a ton of fun stuff.

Saturday morning I woke up & got ready to go to Zumba Toning with my sister & our friend Kelly. I texted them both & told them to wear Valentine's colors to work out with every intention of taking a picture of us, then totally forgot because I was so sore from the million lunges we did during class. If you've never done Zumba Toning - it's all of the fun of normal Zumba, with body weight exercises thrown in to tone you up - hence the lunges. You also get to use these fun hand weights that shake like maracas. #bonus

After class, we got bundled up & stopped at Starbucks to pick up a hot beverage to take with us to the Public Market. The plan was to walk around & get some fresh produce, but somehow I ended up with a warm apple cider donut instead...

If you don't know, apple cider donuts are my absolute favorite & I smelled them as soon as I got out of the car. My sister knows my weakness & bought me one since it was Valentine's Day. She's just the best. We did buy some produce, as well as real maple syrup, farm raised steak, and cheese curd.

Once we were sufficiently frozen, we headed to lunch at Magnolia's. They have the best paninis, soups, and desserts! I ended up with a turkey, bacon, cheese panini with Russian dressing on sourdough - but no dessert since I'd just had a donut.

Then I headed home to my Valentine, so we could take on the ever so romantic task of grocery shopping. Wegmans was crazy between men who'd forgotten to buy presents & people stocking up for the storm that was called for Saturday night. It was one of the few times this weekend I was glad that Ella wasn't with us - no truck cart makes for a much speedier trip.

Finally, we came home & made our own Valentine's dinner of steak, baked potatoes, and green beans. I meant to take a picture, but I was too busy eating.

Sunday morning, we woke up to lots of snow. As in a foot of fresh snow. For a point of reference, this is the snow bank at our house next to my Nissan Rogue.

Eric spent about an hour shoveling & snowblowing, while I got ready for brunch. Since this was my only request for Valentine's Day, I felt like I should get dressed in real clothes. I opted for my favorite sweater with two layers underneath and a scarf on top. It was the perfect cozy brunch outfit, even though Eric found it ironic that I wore a sweater with my maiden name on it for our Valentine's brunch. #whoops #illalwaysbeabliss

The drive to brunch was slow, but thankfully uneventful. I was thinking, oh maybe it'll be quiet since we're probably the only idiots out in this weather. Nope, lots of idiots out & brunch was packed as always. We coincidentally got sat at our favorite table though & I had mini muffins in front of me in no time!

Since I couldn't drink my complimentary mimosas, Eric took one for the team & drank for both of us. He's just a nice guy like that. Then our food came out...

Eric had the fritata & I had a breakfast combo of eggs, bacon, home fries, and pancakes. I didn't eat all of it, but I came pretty close. Which is why I decided I'd drop Eric off at home & head straight to the gym to walk on the treadmill for an hour.

I was feeling really good, so I decided to do arms too & it felt so good. It didn't hurt that I pretty much had the gym to myself either.

I capped off the night watching #SNL40. I'd heard rumblings of an 'NSync reunion, so I was a little disappointed, but the show itself was hysterical! We were laughing through it all & of course I loved that my main man opened it up...
