Training Update - I'm Not

A few people have asked me how my half-marathon training is going, so I guess it's time to fess up. It's not.

Let me elaborate. I'm still working out every day. I am no longer training for the Brooklyn Half Marathon. I'm incredibly disappointed about the turn in events that led to this decision, but it's for the best. It had nothing to do with my training progress, I've followed my plan religiously & was up to running 8 miles. The decision was completely financial. We've simply decided that we can't afford a weekend in NYC right now. Last year's race in DC was far more pricey than we anticipated & even staying with friends, we knew we'd overspend again. So, we did the whole responsible parent thing & bailed on the trip.

Right now I'm spending some time reevaluating my fitness goals. My heart wasn't in the training like it was last year, I just don't love long runs. I'm also thinking about adding a lot more lifting into my routine as summer approaches. I'm a lot more comfortable in the gym now, so I think I can handle it. I'll be sure to keep you posted when I set firm goals. For now, I'm just going to keep on, keeping on...

  1. Hey Bri - I always think that when life sends a signal you probably can't afford something ,.. you probably can't!

You could always do Wineglass Half in October ... it is close enough to do it as a day trip, is a nice flat course with great scenery, and the race itself isn't TOO pricey ... I love the full and will be doing it again this year as well..

  2. Doing the responsible thing isn't always easy. And it's never fun. Hooray for weight lifting. I love how strong I get when I lift weights. I keep telling myself that I will do this bit I fail miserably. I'm the master of excuses.

  3. The most important thing is that you're happy with your choice and having fun working out. I know you said you just don't love the long runs, but if you have any "I've come this far, I don't want to let it go to waste" feelings, maybe look for a half marathon close to home that wouldn't require the added expenses of the destination race. Or even a local 10K might be fun.
Good luck with your new plans, whatever they may be :)
