Pajama Day!

It's Spirit Week at my school and we're busy celebrating the half way mark of the school year. How do we do this? We dress up like superheroes and wear jerseys. Today we're celebrating by wearing PJs. Now some people might find it inappropriate for teachers to partake, but as the cheerleading coach, spirit is my thing. I wholeheartedly participate each day. Getting up was so easy today, knowing that once I got out of the shower, I could slip back into yoga pants and not into a skirt.

Now to be clear, I do not look like a total slob kabob. I am pretty pulled together. I'm rocking yoga pants, a zip up hoodie, and my slippers. I showered this morning & my hair is done. I could easily run errands after work and no one would bat an eye. (This was NOT the case for two of my co-workers who had to run out in their capes yesterday.) However, if there is a fire drill we're all screwed because I've seen at least half of the staff in their slippers today.

As an extra treat... I let myself drink a hot chocolate on the way to work this morning. It was SO good. I got it from Wegmans instead of Starbucks and was very excited to see that they didn't use any powder in the drink. Instead it was a thick chocolate syrup & skim milk. Again, it was SO good and perfect on this WINDY morning.

You've Gotta Earn That Rest Day!

Yesterday was insanely stressful. I had my tenure observation with the superintendent of our school district, followed by three CSE meetings. If you're a teacher, you know how awful that day sounds. If you aren't trust me, it wasn't a picnic. Everything ended up being fine, but I was a stress case, which is why one of my work BFFs left this on my desk! I love anything White Chocolate Macadamia Nut! Subway cookies are super moist too.



When I got home, I was able to catch up on Nashville. I am obsessed with this show. I love country music and I love the glamour of being a celebrity. Hayden is killing it on this show and every week I tune in to find out what's going to happen next. So addicting! If you aren't watching, you should be.

Eric didn't have to work overtime, so I was able to make it to spin class! I did 50 minutes on the bike and then ran a mile to cool down afterwards. I really cranked up my resistance, so I didn't cover as many miles as I normally do. I can feel it in my thighs this morning though and I'm quite certain that I got a great workout in. As I was leaving the gym last night I felt like I'd really pushed myself & earned my rest day today - good feeling. 

This wasn't last night, but I wore this same outfit.
The only difference was I subbed out the skirt for capris.

And just because I'm sure you'd rather look at Ella's face than my sweaty post-spinning one...

Bikini Season

The blogging world is already buzzing about the approach of spring, and even if I have a solid 4 months before I can even fathom wearning a bikini, I know that now is the best time to shop. In the past I've waited & have had to settle for a bikini that is "ehh" instead "oh wow." Let's take a walk down memory lane...

Let the Training Begin!

Yesterday was the first day of my official training plan. I am running the the Nike Women's Half Marathon in DC on April 28th. I can't believe it's only 12 weeks away! I am beyond excited. This is going to be my first half marathon, and hopefully not my last. I still have a lot of planning to do & will keep you posted on how things are going!




My original plan for yesterday was to stay after school and run in our weightroom before I picked up Ella. That didn't happen though. Ella didn't feel well & was a grump at daycare. So, I picked her up at 3:30 and we went right home. She fell asleep in her car seat and slept for 2 1/2 hours! That is absolutely unheard of for her... I guess the girl needed some rest!


As soon as Eric got home, I headed to the gym. Of course, she woke up 3 minutes after I left the house. Eric was not amused...

My training plan called for me to run 3 to 4 miles last night. I ran just over 3.5 miles then walked a half mile as a cool down. I was able to finish this in under 45 minutes, which I felt good about. Since Ella was awake, I got in the car and headed home to stretch out. She was VERY awake when I got home & was more than willing to "help" me stretch. You're just going to have to trust me on how cute it was, Eric refused to take a picture for me. (grump)


My legs felt surprisingly good this morning. There wasn't any tightness in my calves, but I threw on my compression sleeves just in case it decided to creep up on me throughout the day.

A Winning Weekend

I had an fantastic weekend! It was filled with people that I love & food that I love to eat - such a perfect combination!

On Friday night, my Aunt Babs came to stay at our house. She brought all of the supplies for chicken fajitas with her & we had a Mexican feast! She brought these chips with her & they are amazing! You put them into the oven for 5 minutes & they come out tasting just like the ones you'd get at Chili's. We had them with queso & I probably ate half the bag myself.

 
Babs also brought my favorite dessert - WEGMAN'S CARROT CAKE! They make these in miniversions, so it wasn't a whole cake. It was just the perfect size to have a slice on Friday night. In case you didn't know, cream cheese frosting is the way to my heart.

 
I spent the day at competition on Saturday & when I finally got home, I went out to dinner with my parents. We went to The Distillery, which is my favorite restaurant. We had originally tried to go to Texas Roadhouse, but it's a new restaurant in town and had an hour and a half wait - NO WAY. Ella discovered her new passion in life - celery. She is obsessed with it. 

On Sunday morning, I went out to breakfast with my parents at a local diner. I had an awesome ham & cheese omlette that kept me full long into the afternoon. We spent the rest of the day at home hanging out. I finished reading The Heavy on my iPad & drank copious amounts of unsweetened iced tea.

Later that night, we all snuggled up on the couch & watched 60 Minutes, because we like to seem smart. At one point I heard Eric say to Ella, "Shhhh Daddy has to watch this so he won't seem stupid when people are talking about things other than baby toys at work." He's so right. I feel out of the loop A LOT these days because I'm so caught up in our day to day world. Thank God for 60 Minutes and the People app!

A Perfect Season

Yesterday was the perfect end to a perfect season. I have had the most talented and well behaved group of girls to work with this season & they've achieved so much. I cannot say enough good things about them. They're sweet & goofy while simultaneously strong & determined.

We started the day at 6 a.m. It was far too early and far too cold, but there was a buzz in the air. As the Freshman & JV teams boarded the bus, you could tell that they meant business. Everyone had their eyes on the prize. Both teams walked away with first place, and then Varsity got 1st and a spot in the Elite 8. This is the second year in a row we've done this & it feels amazing to leave the tournament with no regrets.

How Is It Thursday Already?

This week is going extremely fast. It is also extremely cold. I try not to complain about the weather, because I live in upstate NY & it's just a reality of life. But when it hits the single digits, I start to whine a little.

Ella is a sick little Peanut. She has an awful cold. I can't  imagine being sick and not having the capability to blow my nose. The whole scene makes me very sad, but it isn't bothering her at all. She's a trooper. She'll cough up a lung for 10 seconds then be smiling & talking to me. I seriously have the best baby ever.

Since Ella is sick, I cancelled practice last night. I never do that. Ever. My principal emailed me & was concerned that someone had died or was in the hospital - that is how big of a deal this was. I wouldn't have gone through with it if I wasn't confident that my girls are awesome & will rock on Saturday. I really want them to win & have a perfect season. If they don't win, I'll feel personally responsible because I cancelled practice. Let the stressing begin...

I was able to sneak out & get my hair cut last night and it feels SO healthy! I got 3 inches trimmed off the bottom & had my layers put back in. Eric complained about it of course, but that's only because he loves SUPER long hair, regardless of whether it is healthy or not.


I get my hair done at Rock Paper Scissors and absolutely love them! If you live in Rochester - check them out! (Bonus - there is free wine & candy at every visit! Holla!)

Even though I've felt like poop, I've kept my eating in check. I've cut out my morning bagel every day this week and have replaced it with a protein bar and banana. It's about the same calorie wise, but I'm getting far more nutritional value. I've also done really well with my mini-goal of packing lunch every day. I haven't had any take out this week, which not only helps my waist line, it helps my wallet too. (It doesn't hurt that I don't want to step outside either!)

What I'm Reading... The Heavy

On Monday night I headed to the gym with every intention of taking spin class. But after 10 minutes on the bike, my lungs just couldn't take it anymore. I decided not to kill myself & headed to a treadmill. I jacked up the incline & began walking. Something is better than nothing.

Whenever I walk on the treadmill, I read trashy magazines. Somehow I got the latest edition of People, rather than the 2 month old copy, and started to gaze in awe at the Golden Globes dresses. But eventually I ran out of pretty pictures & ended up reading about a book called, "The Heavy."

I was totally intrigued by the synopsis & had to download it onto my iPad. I started reading it last night and I'm already 100 pages in. The struggles that she faces both as a woman and as a parent resonate with me. I worry all the time about being a positive role model for Ella and pray daily that she doesn't struggle with healthy living in the ways that I did. I want better for her, which is exactly what the author of this book wants for her daughter. 




While I was finding a synopsis to post for you all, I found out that this book is actually quite controversial. Read here... and here.

MLK Day!

Ella & I were very excited to have a three day weekend & made TONS of plans for the day. Sadly, we had to scale back because her teething has left both of us feeling a little exhausted. We both slept in, and then we had some breakfast while watching Nashville on the DVR. 

While I got ready for the day, Ella took a little snooze. How adorable is she with her BFF Mortimer? My heart melted when I came downstairs & saw this. 

 
Eric texted me to let us know that he had an hour for lunch. We decided to meet at Panera near his work. I had Broccoli Cheddar Soup & he had a bowl of Baked Potato Soup with half a panini. Ella had milk - though she was really eyeing the M&M cookie that Eric & I shared.
 

After we left Panera, Ella & I hit up Target. How is it that I can walk into that store needing deodorant and come out with $50 worth of random stuff. I could have easily spent $100 but I did an edit before we got to the register. Here's a photo of all my loot. 
 

The socks were only $2 a pair & will work great with my boots. Also, Ella REALLY needed some new undershirts & bibs. I found the Clif bars while searching for DayQuil (I'm fighting off a cold - no time for that). It really is a miracle that I remembered to get the deodorant because I was so distracted! 

When we got back home, we relaxed on the couch and caught up on The Biggest Loser. Ella really loves TBL, we watched it on Netflix when she was a baby, like 7 seasons worth. She also really loves her toes.


It was such a perfect day with my peanut. I can't wait for February Break when I get her to myself for a whole week!

The Return of Hockey (aka The Loss of My Husband)

The NHLreturned this weekend, which means two things for me.
  1. Eric will monopolize the television even more than normal. Luckily, I'll start getting home at 4 soon, and can watch my favorite shows on DVR before he gets home. 
  2. Ella finally got to wear her Sabres jersey. If it was up to her father, she'd wear it every day. Or she'd rotate it with a Bills jersey and wear it every other day. (Notice she isn't wearing a headband - Eric says that hockey girls don't wear headbands. He stinks.) 



She was really digging the jersey, especially the sleeves, which she chewed on non-stop.

We made pizza & my favorite wings, then snuggled on the couch like lazy bums. It was so nice to just cuddle as a family after another crazy week. I'm really looking forward to the end of cheer season so life can slow down just a little bit. 

While on the couch, I read my latest issue of Shape. 



While reading, I learned 3 things:
  1. Jenny McCarthy is 40? What? She doesn't look it. I also love her passion about autism. While I don't believe in everything she believes, I've worked with enough autistic kids that I respect any parent who has to deal with the disability every day.
  2.  I'm addicted to success stories. It makes me feel like I'm not alone in my weight loss journey to read about others who are fighting the same battle every day. This has always been the case for me. When I belonged to Weight Watchers, that was the feature of the website that I frequented the most. If you want someone to read your weight loss story & cheer you on - I'm your girl.
  3. I read an article on happiness & one of their secrets to happiness was to embrace good enough. I think that I'm slowly learning to do this. Parenthood has certainly made me abandon perfectionism, and work is just too chaotic to fine tune every detail for every lesson. Maybe I'll regain my perfectionist attitude as Ella grows up, my mom certainly hasn't lost hers, but until then I'm happy with good enough. (Which is why I am just getting around to taking down my Christmas decorations today!)

Another Victory & A Mini Road Trip

I woke up early Saturday morning to get ready & head to school to meet the bus. We were performing at 9:06 & needed to get there, check in, & relax. Thankfully all of the girls were on time & things went smoothly. They performed an almost flawless routine & we walked away with another first place trophy!

Ella didn't sleep well on Friday night & once she woke up we found out why. HER FIRST TOOTH CAME IN! She's totally obsessed with it & can't stop playing with it with her tongue.



Competition was over by noon & my parents had come to watch, so we headed off to lunch. We settled on Red Robin because I wanted a burger & my dad "needed" a beer. (Cheer competitions have that effect on him.) My parents feel that setting Ella down is a ridiculous notion. So instead of enjoying her chicken sandwich, my mom wrestled with Ella while eating. It was very funny to watch & the tables around us enjoyed the entertainment.



Since Eric decided to go visit friends for the night, I decided to go with my sister to our parents house for the night. It's about an hour & a half drive, so once we got everything loaded, we made a beeline for Starbucks. It was a really nice drive & I got to chat with my sister about our upcoming trip to Lake Placid and hear about her new job.



Once we got to my parents, we immediately piled into the minivan with them because my whole family was convening for pizza & wings at my grandma's house. Ella loves it when we all get together because she is held non-stop. I love these get togethers because wine & dessert are usually involved. I had a chocolate frosted brownie with walnuts - yum!

Disney Marathon, New Bars, & Mini Goals for the Weekend

Let me start with some cuteness, because I know that you've all missed seeing Ella's face yesterday! She was the happiest baby in the world when she woke up yesterday morning & I couldn't resist taking a million pictures of her!


One of my cheerleaders just got back from Disney because her mom ran the Disney Marathon! Her finishing time was 4:35 - but that's because it was unseasonably HOT so she stopped to take a bunch of pictures with the characters along the route instead of killing herself. She said it was a great time & that she would definitely do it again. They were sweet enough to bring Ella home a present! (I'm telling you... everyone just loves her!)

When we got home from practice last night I had an uncharacteristic amount of energy for a Thursday night. So, I decided to hit the gym and get some grocery shopping done. I did a 5K at a 9:40 pace, which is pretty average for me. I wasn't killing myself, but I wasn't slacking off either.

After I finished up from the gym, I headed accross the street to Wegmans. We needed a bunch of random things, but I was also in hot pursuit of Pure bars. I am new to the organic/ clean eating scence and was looking for something less processed than my normal Kellog's Fiber One. I read on a blog (I just spent 20 minutes trying to figure out where I saw this & can't find the link) that Pure Bars are a great option. So... I went onto their website and found where they were sold locally. Obviously, Wegmans had them because Wegmans is awesome. I bought the Apple Cinnamon version & will be testing it out with lunch today.

While I was in the bar aisle, I also stumbled upon Clif bars. I've always been curious about them, but because I eat like a 5 year old, I never thought I'd like them. WRONG. I tested out the White Chocolate Macadamia Nut and am in love. I may buy them by the case! So delicious!
It looked so good, I started eating it in the car on the way home.

Mini Goals for the Weekend:
  1. While eating out with my family, try to order salads with grilled chicken. DO NOT OVERINDULGE. (I did last weekend & spent all this week making up for it.)
  2. Run at least 10 miles between Saturday, Sunday, and Monday.
  3. Win First Place at Competition!
  4. Find Ella a pair of sneakers. The girl needs some traction to learn how to crawl.

Pinterest Thursday - Home Edition

I'm looking for a new way to store my bags & this might just be it! I'm going to talk to my dad this weekend to see if he can find me a vintage door. If he can, I'm going to make him put hooks into it for me too. (He's a good dad. He'll say yes.)

 
I got a gorgeous hurricane vase from Pottery Barn for Christmas last year & have never found the perfect filling for it. I think this might be the ticket. Coffee beans are relatively cheap & I already have a white candle so I can tackle this project right away.


Last, I love this sign. It's so true in our house. Things will be spotless on Sunday morning and by Wednesday it's a disaster. Like so many things in our life, we do our best. I'm simply not going to stress over finger prints on the window & a little dog hair on the floor. Life's too short :)

Oh... You're One of Those People?

Last night, I was sitting with a group of cheer parents at a basketball game. Ella was on my lap, and we were just chit chatting about life. We were discussing the upcoming long weekend (MLK DAY - woot woot!) and our plans. As I started to discuss my plans to complete a 7  mile run on Sunday and another 4 on Monday, I was met with a few blank stares. The comment that followed has been stuck in my mind ever since...
"Oh... you're one of THOSE people?"

For the record, I was polite & responded with a chuckle. Inside, I was fuming.

Yes, I am one of THOSE people. I work hard to keep myself healthy. I take a few hours out of my week and spend them running.  I don't drive thru McDonald's on a regular basis. I don't guzzle soda. I'm taking ownership of my life. Is there something wrong with that? No.

I have worked extremely hard over the past seven years. I am not perfect, but I try. When I fall off the horse, I get back on. Life's a journey & I'm making the most of mine.


Rant over. I just had to share. I'm hoping that if you're reading, maybe you're one of those people too.
